Looking for a Book to Read

I've been looking for some books to read for this summer, I was wondering what you guys think. Some books I have really enjoyed are:
Heart of Darkness
1984
Lord of the Flies
Dan Brown books
Farewell to Arms - Ernest Hemingway
Ishmael - Daniel Quinn

I like books that make you think, or that are exhilarating. Interested to hear what you guys have to say.

Candide by Voltaire.

Written around 1750. Really interresting, the language is the different, the narrative tools are different.

One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez

The book that invented a genre, magic realism. Ok maybe didn't invent it, but championed it.

The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón

Epic tale of a love that wasn't meant to be.

If you're lookin to read Orwell, why not pick up Animal Farm aswell? It's a really short, easy read book.

Lord of the Flies and Catch 22 at the top!

Cormac McCarthy might be good.

Try Blood Meridian.

Thanks guys, I'll give most of these a shot. How does Animal Farm compare to 1984?

It definitely has that Orwellian feel to it. It's hard not to see that he's taken a lot of the main themes from Animal Farm with him into Nineteen Eighty-Four.

It's also worth reading up on the political climate the book was published in.

To be completely honest, it is actually a bit banal. In the sense that it's very easy to see what he wants you to feel when you read it, and what his own bias is.

I hope that makes sense.

I'll also give an honorable mention to Fear And Loathing: in las vegas/On the campaign Trail. Both very good books by counter-culture favourite Hunter S. Thompson.

if you like fear and loathing also read rum diaries (also by hunter s thompson)

animal farm is real short, easy read. like don said its kinda transparent though.

and brave new world > 1984

if you want mad crazy time consuming read the wheel of time series. its more fantasy than any of those but its gotta be like 15k pages total.

a book a read recently i think you'd like: the tao of wu
by the rza

No actually I haven't..

I'd love to read the hells angels one. Gotta remember that.

I just found this book, it's called Primary Colors, by anon. Pretty funny read so far.

I just started it, but it's about a southern governor who is trying to run for president.

I saw it and thought what the hell.

I've got a decent cash flow next month, I'll have to lay some money aside for new books. So far I've been using dictionaries to fill my shelves. I hate half books cases. not a big deal.

im gonna pick some of these up, im intrigued by the voltaire one. thanks don

i recently read lolita, was interesting but not my favorite genre. before that, i read the three kingdoms which was this 1000 page epic novel about the three kingdom period of chinese history. it was pretty awesome, dry at some points but overal very rewarding if you like epic novels like lord of the rings.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms is quite possibly the greatest book ever written in/about China.
