Poem: Oedipus
“Oedipus”
In a far off land quite near the sea Stands a man with a mother on the heart and the head Close to his own Gethsemane of golden rods, Of golden rods ma’ma, ma’ma they sing. Tell me again of who stopped the Sphinx And stood aloft Thebes as king to was, to be Legend in a right his own and married the woman of his dreams, His dreams splashing on the land, standing in the sea. Does a traveler have a second tale? Mighty king had but one, Now none, now none to tell any sons, only sisters For him that shouldn’t have been. Oh Sophocles, You bastard.
